The Odyssey - Essay Example Telemachus is the son of Odysseus, and he wants to stop the suitors from taking advantage of his fatherââ¬â¢s estate. He searches for his fatherââ¬â¢s news so that they can proclaim their estate. Odysseus Odysseus is portrayed as a leader with Homeric character. He is powerful, confident, and courageous, and wants to achieve glory. Conversely, he has a character trait that makes him dissimilar from the others since he is particularly intelligent, and this is evident by his deliberations before any action. His intelligence and quick thinking helped him in the difficult situations that he encountered. His intelligence saves him when he escapes from Cyclops cave, and when he hides the disgust from the suitors; ââ¬Å"please, play the wedding song for the guestsâ⬠(Steinruck, 2008). Odysseus is remarkably eloquent in his speeches because he manipulates and convinces the audience. His soft tongue makes many people in the audience favor his assertions. This is evident when he wi ns the trust of Nausicca by using a comforting approach. Just like other Homeric heroes, Odysseus is striving to achieve glory from the society through noble deeds, and he also wants to go home. He is an adventures person, and this is portrayed by his luxurious life with calypso in an exotic land even though it lasts for a moment. He practices infidelity with Calypso for a short time and realizes he wants to go back home because calypso does not compare to his wife. He is concerned about his home, because he constantly thinks about home while spending time with Phaeacians. Odysseus is torn between the quest of getting home and achieving glory. Most of his time for getting home is wasted by his search for glory. He is troubled when he loses men and time while sacking land. Odysseus is a patient man ââ¬Å"I will wait for as long as it takes in these cavesâ⬠while enjoying milk and cheese (Steinruck, 2008). His patience makes him trapped in the cave when the Cyclops returns. Home ric characters are presented to be static since they are complex and realistic. These characters do not divert from their mission as portrayed by characters in modern novels and stories. However, this rule is broken by Odysseus and Telemachus. Odysseus is consumed by his quest of achieving glory, and this makes him reveal his identity to the Cyclops, thus bringing Poseidonââ¬â¢s anger on him. He is willing to temper his pride with patience at the concluding part of the epic. Even when he is disguised as a pauper Odysseus does not react to the abuse, ââ¬Å"I will wait until the traps I have set and loyal people will place me at a suitable position for striking backâ⬠(Steinruck, 2008). Telemachus Telemachus was a child when his father left for Troy. At the beginning of the novel, Telemachus is still growing up. He is encountered by many challenges because he does not know how to protect the land from the suitors. Athena tells Telemachus to fight for his fatherââ¬â¢s estat e as she tells him ââ¬Å"you are no longer a childâ⬠(Steinruck, 2008). He is facing this challenge because he recently became aware of the real intentions of the suitors. Telemachus is told by Athena that his father is still alive, and he needs to go to Pylos and Sparta to enquire about any news of his father. While he prepares to make his journey to Pylos and Sparta, Athena visits him, and she is masked as a mentor. She tells Telemachus ââ¬Å"

Ineffective and Effective Leadership Styles :: Leadership
Countless books and articles have been written about leaders, who made decisions that played significant effects on our country and the world. Leaders from the military, business world and sports have all played crucial impacts on the way we live our lives. Their legacyââ¬â¢s live on in giving others the inspirational and motivational drive to become great leaders. One of the most influential and highly regarded leaders during World War II (WWII) and the Korean War was General Matthew Bunker Ridgway. Ridgway was a man who made countless sacrifices in order to prevent future impeding conditions. In 1928 he anticipated being on the Armyââ¬â¢s pentathlon team to compete in the Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam, but decided it was more important to prepare himself in becoming a better leader. "I could not reject so bright an opportunity to prepare myself for any military-diplomatic role that the future might offer," according to Patterson (2006). By the time WWII had begun Ridgway was a Brigadier General in command of the, newly developed, 82ND Airborne Division. He did a combat jump, jumping out of a plane by parachute, with his troops into battle on June 6, 1944, which happened to be Normandy according to Patterson (2006). Afterwards, he was awarded his second Distinguished Service Cross for his actions. According to Headquarters, First U.S. Army (1944) the citation states ââ¬Å"Major General Ridgway jumped by parachute at approximately 0200 prior to the dawn of "D" Day and landed about 3/4 mile northeast of *****, France, to spearhead the parachute landing assault of his Airborne Division on the ****. Throughout "D" Day, he visited every point in the then surrounded area in order to evaluate the opposition and to encourage his men. He penetrated to the front of every active sector without thought of the personal danger involved. He exposed himself continuously to small arms, mortar and artillery fire; as, by his presence and through words of encouragement, he greatly assisted and personally directed the operations of one of his battalions in the important task of securing the bridgehead across the ***** River, which required a frontal assault against strongly entrenched enemy positions. His persona l bravery and his heroism were deciding factors in the success of his unit in France. Major General Ridgway's gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

With these industrial buildings booming, it has brought about a vast amount of pollution. This pollution has taken a huge toll on the population. Between toxic air and undrinkable water, it could be extremely hard to remain healthy while residing here. Those who donââ¬â¢t have the proper means to keep their bodies clean of these harmful toxins, suffer the toll of sickness and disease. Even if people do have the means, sometimes it is inevitable and impossible to avoid the toxins in some of the major Indian cities. Overpopulation and Personal Responsibility Ever since I was a little girl, Iââ¬â¢ve dreamed of having a large family when I was older. I envied friends with three or four siblings. Iââ¬â¢d proudly tell anyone I was going to have six children when I grew up. Now, Iââ¬â¢m a little older, and still far away from making that decision, my conscious will still face a looming dilemma. With my knowledge negative impacts caused by overpopulation, how can I deliberately have a large family, while upholding my environmentalist values? Over the past few years Iââ¬â¢ve found myself paying particular attention to articles about overpopulation, foreign adoption, and infertility caused by environmental factors. The older I get, the more stories I hear of friendsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦We canââ¬â¢t even agree on the right to have an abortion, much less the government using them to control population growth. In the US, women are concerned the right for an abortion will be taken away. On the other side of the world, women fear the government requiring an abortion. What happens when nature wonââ¬â¢t let us have as many children as we want? In contrast to the fear of abortion, the fear of infertility is striking many couples around the world. More and more evidence is surfacing that relates factors in the environment to many forms of infertility. Studies have linked chemicals such as DDT and other pesticides to higher chances of infertility. Last summer, while on a plane I started a conversation with the woman next to me. She recently adopted a baby from Romania, and was anxious to get home to her little girl. She and her husband could not have their own child; they had spent years on hormone therapy and waiting lists for adoption. While on a religious mission to Romania, they decided to start the process of adopting a foreign baby. The couple spent many months and $20,000 to get their new toddler. She told me about all of the red tape and hurdles of getting their daughter, but she finally made it to their home. I was shocked to discover the difficulties of foreign adoption. This is the average amount spent on international adoption, and often there is no financial assistance.
